Gemstone Care

Most gemstones will respond well to warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush at home. However, some gems do have sensitivities. Ultrasonic cleaning is not suitable for all types of gemstone jewelry and it should be used with caution. The machine’s vibration can damage porous, brittle, and fragile gems. Ultrasonic cleaning is okay if gems are not fractured, filled, or dyed – diamond, ruby, sapphire, amethyst, citrine, garnet.

Do not use ultrasonic cleaning. Avoid sudden temperature changes, abrasives and contact with cosmetics, hairspray, perfume or household chemicals:

  • Amber, Apatite, Azurite, Emerald, Charoite, Dolomite, Fluorite, Garnet, Lolite, Jade, Kyanite, Labradorite, Lapis Lazuli, Lava Rock, Malachite, Onyx, Opal, Pearl, Peridot, Rhodonite, Sodalite, Topaz, Tourmaline, Turquoise, Zircon.

Basic jewelry care:

  • Bloodstone, Chrysocolla, Chrysoprase, Jasper, Sardonyx, White, Onyx, Agate, Carnelian, Cat's Eye, Alexandrite, Sapphire, Ruby, Diamond, Hematite, Pyrite, Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, Aventurine, Dumortierite, Pietersite, Tiger’s Eye, Tiger’s Iron, Hawk’s Eye, Spinel, Topaz.

Emerald:

Emerald jewelry requires special care and should be handled with gentleness. We recommend taking off your emerald jewelry, while using soap, such as during showers or dishwashing. Avoid cleaning the jewelry with ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or acetone, and stay away from strong soaps, jewelry cleaners, or other harsh chemicals. It's best to avoid wearing your emerald jewelry alongside other rings or during activities that involve gripping hard objects, bumping the jewelry against surfaces, or putting pressure on your hands. Such activities may include weightlifting, rock climbing, cooking, biking, or yoga. To clean your emerald, simply use room-temperature running water, mild hand soap, and a soft toothbrush. Gently brush the underside of the emerald to remove dirt and grease, and finish by drying the jewelry with a soft cotton cloth.
